Separate . . . unequal in the eyes of man.
Equal in the eyes of God.
Safety Harbor’s Black cemetery.
Buried and neglected.
Forgotten by community.
Remembered by family.
Again and again the earth opened up
Embracing the bodies
of souls gone to rest.
Headstones standing, fallen over, destroyed.
Markers with names remembered.
Empty spaces with no memory.
The community awoke
and came together.
Black, white, brown.
Earth Day, April 22.
They stepped gently
on sacred ground
to remember, honor, and restore.
And the Earth cried, Hallelujah!
